When I was asked to review Eisberg alcohol-free wine and to try out some mocktails with it I jumped at the chance! I have never been a big drinker but I do love a good few glasses of wine on occasion whilst sat at home relaxing. When I was pregnant I actually craved beer, wine and cider. I had the odd Becks Blue to help with the craving of beer, but I still always fancied a nice glass of wine. This is when I decided to try some of the alcohol-free wines. I tried a few different brands and I found they didn’t taste much like wine at all. I came across Eisberg and saw that it was actually de-alcoholised wine (wine with the alcohol removed) and this instantly had me excited. I have to admit if you are a real wine lover then you can taste the difference, it does taste like a very weak wine but the good news is it actually tastes like wine. Not just some fruity drink in what looks like a wine bottle. I am a white wine lover and not so much a red wine fan. However I much preferred the alcohol free Cabernet Sauvignon (red wine) to the white as I always found the white to be a little too sweet for me. So fast track to over a year and half later and I am trying the wine again (non-pregnant) and of course I chose the red one. I was made aware of some nice mocktails that can be made with the wine that I had never tried before so I decided to give them a go. Unfortunately some of the ingredients had to be substituted for something else and in the end I ended up pretty much making my own mocktail.
The mocktail I was trying out was the winter fruit cobbler, the recipe is as follows:
Basically, I couldn’t get blackberries, so I substitued them for blueberries (close enough…) and I had granulated sugar not caster sugar. I also couldn’t actually get any mint at my local shops so I substitued with a mint tea bag dipped in to give a bit of flavour. I also didn’t have the crushed ice so I chilled the drink in a tumbler before pouring it in to the wine glass. I also was super lazy and used some lemon juice from a bottle rather than cutting up a fresh lemon. So as you can imagine, it was nothing like the mocktail above. But having an ex-barman as a boyfriend meant he could keep me right. I did slightly over do it on the lemon but the mocktail actually did taste rather nice. It tasted like any other alcoholic cocktail and I don’t think I would have guessed that it was non-alcoholic if someone else had made it for me. It reminded me of Sangria with a slight hint of mint! I think it would be ideal to make in large quantities as a non-alcoholic fruit punch for parties.
As I only made one glass of mocktail for myself I still had about 2/3 of a bottle left. So I decided to make something else with it. I chose to make non-alcoholic mulled wine because back when I was pregnant and I was coming towards the end of my pregnancy in October, I made it a lot! When it was nearing Winter, Places started serving mulled wine which is my favourite. Everytime I got a whiff of hot mulled wine I instantly craved it for days. So when I was pregnant I decided to have a go creating my own non-alcoholic Mulled wine with the Cabernet Sauvingnon. I couldn’t believe how easy this was and it didn’t taste at all different from normal mulled wine. I loved it! My partner will not drink alcohol alternatives as he thinks they all taste bad. However even he used to love my non-alcoholic mulled wine and we would drink it quite a bit in the Winter months. I didn’t feel like I was missing out and it was probably one of the best non-alcoholic drinks I had ever tasted. So I therefore decided with the rest of the wine this time to re-create this. It takes less than 10 mins to make and you only need a few simple ingredients!
Eisberg Cabernet Sauvignon
1-2 large Oranges
1 Cinnamon stick
2-3 Bay leaves
5 tablespoons of sugar
The amount of each ingredient above is an estimate, because I always add ingredients bit by bit slowly to see how much I need. it is so easy to do and once you have chopped up the oranges in to large segments you are ready to start. It literally is a case of pouring the full bottle of wine in to the saucepan on a medium heat, add the oranges (add 1 full orange to begin with), then add in the cinnamon stick, 2 bay leaves and 3 table spoons of sugar. Let that heat up for a few minutes then taste it and add accordingly with the remaining ingredients. Once nice and hot and the flavours have really mixed with the wine, it is ready! Make sure to give it a good stirr now and again whilst it is heating up. It really doesn’t taste like non-alcoholic mulled wine and it really is a great idea for dinner parties and events in winter for those who either don’t drink or can’t.
So to sum it up, If you are someone who really isn’t a fan of alcohol-free wine, my advice to you is not to write it off just yet. The wine on it’s own may not be to your taste, but add some different ingredients to it, make a mocktail or a wine spritzer and it may just be the perfect alcohol alternative. Not to mention the fact that it has about 2/3 less calories in than normal wine! Which is a huge bonus of course for those dieting who really crave a glass or two of wine. I definitely think Eisberg is the closest thing to normal wine that I have tasted but I do think that it is even more enjoyable when used to make a mocktail! I am interested to try the other alcohol free wines by Eisberg in mocktails, to see what other great tasting drinks I can make.
